Why did the University of Michigan move to Ann Arbor?

Michigan became a state in 1837, and the Legislature moved to establish a state university. A competition was held to find a permanent home for a bigger, better U-M. Ann Arbor itself was only 13 years old at the time the university came to town, having been founded in 1824 by a couple of guys with wives named Ann.
