Tradition. Generally, the major sports leagues had come to the number of games each team plays in the 1960's and 1970's. The NBA has had its teams play an 82 - game regular- season schedule since the 1960's. Because of the 82 - game schedule, each team plays four conference opponents just three times instead of four.
